From SU7 to YU7: Xiaomi’s Rapid Rise in the Electric Vehicle Industry
At the end of June 2025, Xiaomi Auto held a press conference in Beijing, officially announcing the launch and sale of its second electric vehicle, the YU7. Within just three minutes of opening reservations, YU7 received 200,000 pre-orders. As one of Tesla’s main competitors in China, the YU7’s pre-order volume is four times the total sales of Tesla’s Cybertruck over the past 18 months.
Order Statistics:
200,000 orders in the first 3 minutes
Over 289,000 orders within the first hour
Around 240,000 locked-in orders after 18 hours
Xiaomi also announced that customers who previously pre-ordered SU7 but have not yet received delivery can convert their order to a YU7. Data shows that around 15% of YU7 orders are converted from SU7 orders. While some have questioned whether the massive number of YU7 orders may be inflated, Xiaomi’s current SU7 sales figures suggest these numbers are achievable.
The Xiaomi YU7 is positioned as the Coupe SUV, adopting the same sporty design as the SU7, with a front face that follows Xiaomi Auto’s signature styling. The YU7 is currently available in three versions: Standard, Pro, and Max. Their prices and standard range specifications are as follows:
Model | Price (RMB/USD) | Drive Type | Estimated Range (CLTC) |
Standard | ¥253,500 (≈ $35,000) | FWD | ≈ 835 km |
Pro | ¥279,900 (≈ $38,600) | AWD | ≈ 770 km |
Max | ¥329,900 (≈ $45,500) | AWD | ≈ 760 km |
Currently, the biggest challenge Xiaomi faces is insufficient production capacity. With the YU7’s launch and a large number of undelivered SU7 orders still pending, Xiaomi’s factories are under intense pressure. The annual production capacity of Xiaomi Auto’s first and second phase factories is 150,000 vehicles each, which falls short of market demand.
Latest data shows estimated delivery waiting times as follows:
Standard Version: 53–60 weeks
Pro Version: 50–53 weeks
Max Version: 37–40 weeks
According to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, production capacity will be prioritized for domestic orders in China, and international sales will not begin until after 2027. For now, people living in other countries who wish to own a unique Xiaomi vehicle must pay a premium for parallel imports.
Xiaomi built a solid reputation in the automotive industry with the success of the SU7, and the explosive pre-sale performance of the YU7 further validates its EV strategy. With aggressive promotion of its vehicles’ high performance, long range, smart features, and competitive pricing, Xiaomi Auto has quickly become one of China’s most successful EV brands within just a few years. If you're looking for a premium, intelligent, sporty SUV, are willing to wait six months to a year, and value Xiaomi’s connected ecosystem, the YU7 is definitely a worthwhile choice.
