Recently, Guangdong Province has been facing severe rainstorms and flooding. Three consecutive days of heavy rainfall caused river levels to rise sharply, and the water flow to accelerate. On August 5, a video circulating online showed that parts of the newly built “Beijiang Water Sports and Entertainment Center” in Qingyuan, Guangdong, were swept away by floodwaters during the storm. The water park had officially opened on August 2—only to be hit by this unexpected disaster just three days later.
According to the official “Qingyuan Release” WeChat account, the Beijiang Water Sports and Entertainment Center is a supporting facility of the Beijiang South Bank National Fitness Sports Center. It is positioned as the largest inland riverfront entertainment and sports center in Guangdong Province. The first phase of the project, which had just started operations, involved an investment of approximately 30 million RMB. The initial open areas included a 5,000-square-meter water obstacle challenge zone and a 3,500-square-meter children’s water castle. The park also offered a variety of activities for visitors, such as go-kart boats, jet skis, electric surfboards, and water airships. It was originally expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors annually.
On August 6, a staff member from the Beijiang Water Sports and Entertainment Center confirmed that the park had not anticipated the intensity of the typhoon and heavy rainfall. Fortunately, not all equipment was washed away—only some inflatable devices were swept off by the water. Those have already been recovered, and the estimated loss is not considered substantial. The staff also mentioned that the reopening date of the park remains uncertain for now. However, they emphasized that a more comprehensive reinforcement plan will be developed and implemented in response to this incident.
